Practical knowledge, skills and tools to welcome, teach, support and assess new learners in your workplace with confidence.
About this course
As a preceptor, you are often the first colleague a new person meets in a new workplace. The way you welcome, teach and support them shapes their confidence, how well they perform, and whether they stay.
This 15-module programme is for anyone who supports someone new at work: students on placement, new graduates, new staff, experienced people moving into a new area, and people returning after a break.
You will learn to:
- Explain what preceptorship is and the value of the preceptor role
- Understand your roles and responsibilities, and how a preceptor differs from a mentor
- Apply culturally safe practice in your preceptor relationship
- Understand your learner's needs, experience and learning style
- Communicate clearly and adapt your communication style
- Use effective training methods in the workplace
- Manage your time to balance your own work and teaching
- Keep people safe and know when and how to escalate concerns
- Give clear, specific and constructive feedback
- Hold difficult conversations and manage conflict professionally
Each module includes a reading with images and video, a reflection activity, and a short knowledge check. Complete the course to earn your certificate.
