Mandatory training for Registered Nurses in New Zealand aged residential care
About this course
Every shift in aged residential care asks a Registered Nurse to keep residents safe, communicate clearly, and give culturally safe, person-centred care, often under pressure. This programme brings together the mandatory training an RN needs for New Zealand aged care in one place, written for nurses already working in the sector and for internationally qualified nurses moving into New Zealand practice.
The 25 modules follow a recommended order in 5 parts: Foundations: Working in Aotearoa; Communication and Documentation; Safety at Work; Clinical Care; and Complex Care and Rights. You start with the New Zealand context (Te Tiriti o Waitangi, te reo Māori, caring for kaumātua and residents' rights under Ngā Paerewa), build the communication and documentation skills used every shift, then move on to safety at work, core clinical care and complex care, ending with palliative and end-of-life care.
Each module is studied one page at a time and ends with a quiz (pass mark 80%). Study at your own pace on any device, and finish with a certificate you can add to your professional development record.
What you'll learn:
- Practise safely and confidently within the New Zealand health system, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Ngā Paerewa
- Use te reo Māori, tikanga and Te Whare Tapa Whā to give culturally safe care to Māori residents and their whānau
- Communicate, escalate and hand over care using ISBAR, and document care plans, progress notes and incidents to NZ standards
- Protect yourself, colleagues and residents through health and safety, moving and handling, fire safety and infection prevention
- Recognise deterioration and manage medicines, falls, pressure injuries, pain, nutrition and continence in older people
- Support residents living with dementia or delirium, eliminate restrictive practices, respect sexuality and give good end-of-life care
Who it's for: Registered Nurses working in, or moving into, New Zealand aged residential care, including internationally qualified nurses. Also suitable as annual refresher training and orientation for new RN staff.
